Choose Sunshine Sedum to Cheer Up your Green Roof

Maybe one of the best recent introductions to the LiveRoof line of plants, Sunshine Sedum (Sedum album 'Chloroticum')is truly unique amongst Sedum album cultivars.  This tiny, compact grower is named for its vibrant yellowish-green miniature beadlike leaves which maintain their green foliage color throughout the winter months.  Sunshine Sedum grows along the ground in a mosslike fashion and reaches only 1/2 inch in mature height.  In the summer months, it blooms sparsely with white, star-shaped flowers.

Absolutely beautiful all 12 months of the year, this low-growing evergreen is sure to please.  We recommend combining Sunshine Sedum with spring blooming ornamental chives, such as Allium schoenoprasum var. sibiricum 'Pink Giant', and fall-blooming tall Sedums, such as Sedum telephium 'Munstead Dark Red' and Sedum sieboldii 'Nana'.  For summer blooms, Sunshine Sedum will look spectacular with the florific Sedum spurium 'Salsa™' and the blue-leaved Sedum kamtschaticum 'Variegatum.'

Sedum album 'Chloroticum' is an evergreen selected for USDA Hardiness Zone 4.  It is ideal for green roofs in direct sunlight or light shade.  The flowers appear in June & July and attract butterflies.

Contact your local Licensed LiveRoof® Grower to incorporate Sunshine Sedum into your green roof plans.

Check out the NEW 'Cherry Blush®' Sedum

Cherry Blush™ Sedum is named for its olive green, lustrous cherry-red edged foliage.  Borne upon arching stems, the foliage of Cherry Blush® becomes more red-infused as the season progresses, and during summer is topped with dusky pink, star-shaped flowers.

Sedum spurium 'Cherry Blush®' ('Nonio') is a semi-evergreen selected for USDA Hardiness Zone 3.  It is ideal for green roofs in direct sunlight or light shade.  The flowers appear in June & July and attract butterflies.

Cherry Blush® Sedum is only available in the LiveRoof® Hybrid Green Roof System.  Contact your local Licensed LiveRoof® Grower to incorporate Cherry Blush® into your green roof plans.

Muskegon Community College Displays Committment to GREEN with LiveRoof brand green roof installation

Muskegon Community College's LiveRoof® brand green roof was the focus of a press conference last week highlighting the institution's commitment to green initiatives.  The nearly 7000 sq ft green roof installed by Twin Lakes Nursery in September 2009 and designed by Tower Pinkster Titus Associates Inc.

The green roof incorporates several different plant mixes planted in 4" deep and 6" deep trays.  Each mix was pregrown at LiveRoof, LLC in Spring Lake, MI, and then was shipped and installed according to a specific layout to create a dramatic, quilt-like pattern.

The plants were havested and grown in Spring Lake, MI.  The trays were manufactured from recycled polypropylene in Grand Haven, MI.  The engineered soil components were sourced from the Great Lakes region and were blended in Muskegon, MI.

Looking for LiveRoof Representation in the Maritimes

LiveRoof® brand green roof systems have gained the attention of specifiers and building owners in the Canadian Maritimes.  In order to service these customers, LiveRoof, LLC is searching for a qualified rep who may be interested in promoting the product and working with a local licensed grower.

LiveRoof® is distributed in the US and Canada through a network of licensed growers, who each perform marketing and growing of the system in their region.  Marketing may be performed by a salaried staff member or an independent representative or group.

LiveRoof® sales reps spend time interacting with designers, specifiers, contractors and potential owners to educate these customers on the system benefits.  Reps perform product presentations and demonstrations, exhibit at local trade shows, provide technical and design assistance, call on new prospects, and train installers.  Experience in sales is key, experience with horticulture and/or roofing products a plus.

If you are interested or have any referrals, please contact Amber Ponce, Business Development Manager at LiveRoof, LLC via phone 800-875-1392 or email amber@liveroof.com.

"Live" Roofs in Australia

Have you heard about dangerous "live" roofs in Australia?  Confused?  Alarmed?
We want to assure you that this situation is in no way related to LiveRoof® brand products.

Outside of Australia, "LiveRoof®" is synonymous with serene, meadow-like rooftops blanketed with succulent plants.  More at www.liveroof.com.

A LiveRoof® brand green roof in Grand Rapids, MI.

In Australia, a nationwide energy-savings plan encouraged installation of foil insulation in homes.  If improperly installed, the foil insulation can conduct electricity from main cables, creating roof cavities which are "live" with electrical currents.  If the insulation is touched, it could cause shocks, electrocution, and potential death.

Photo (c)foil-insulation.co.uk.  Foil insulation, if properly installed, saves energy by reflecting heat.  If improperly installed, it may pose a safety risk by becoming "live" with electrical current.

The Australian government has ordered safety checks for homes using foil insulation and has currently suspended the program which encouraged their use.

Michigan Grower Develops Hybrid Subterranean Green Roof System
Published on Examiner. com
by Maureen Rice

Green roofs are dotting the landscape on rooftops in cities all across the U.S., and for good reason. Green roof technologies offer economic, social and environmental benefits. They provide savings on energy heating and cooling costs, and capture between 60-100% of storm water runoff that would normally enter municipal wastewater management systems, just to name a few.

"Our green roof is a hybrid system," explained David MacKenzie, Owner of Hortech, Inc. and its green roof subsidiary, LiveRoof, "We tried to take the best features of the other systems that are out there and combine them into one system."   Read the whole article on Examiner.com, http://www.examiner.com/x-28192-Grand-Rapids-Environmental-News-Examiner~y2010m1d20-Live-Roof-green-roof-systems.

LIVEROOF, LLC CONTRIBUTES TO “EXTREME MAKEOVER HOME EDITION”

LIVEROOF, LLC CONTRIBUTES TO “EXTREME MAKEOVER HOME EDITION”
Manufacturer Donates a Green Roof to Needy Family

January 20, 2010

The LiveRoof® brand hybrid green roof system was chosen as the planted roof on a “green” episode of the Emmy-award winning hit TV show “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition”. The special two hour episode, filmed in Buffalo, NY, will air on ABC Television on January 24 at 8:00PM.

Jamaican immigrant Delores Powell and her four children received an extreme makeover of their Buffalo home while they spent the week on a dream vacation. Volunteers led by builder David Homes Construction built the family a new home incorporating energy saving and environmentally friendly products and practices.
The episode was extended by an hour to cover the additional volunteer work performed on more than 100 projects in the surrounding neighborhood.

LiveRoof, LLC, based in Spring Lake, Michigan, donated green roof modules for the family’s home. The trays arrived fully grown with succulent plant species selected for cold winter hardiness. Kees Govers, of LiveRoof Ontario, Inc provided on-site direction for the team of volunteers working on the green roof system. “It was an awe inspiring experience to see the thousands of volunteers participating and all of the companies who donated their services and products to change the entire neighborhood,” states Govers. “Participating was a once in a lifetime experience.” LiveRoof Ontario, Inc is one of twenty companies who grow LiveRoof brand systems throughout the US & Canada.

A team of volunteers installs LiveRoof® green roof modules on ABC’s Extreme Makeover Home Edition in Buffalo, NY. LiveRoof, LLC (Spring Lake, MI) and Permaloc (Holland, MI) provided materials for the green roof system.

The designers incorporated a LiveRoof brand green roof on the project for the financial and environmental benefits it provides. Such benefits include storm water retention, whereby the soil in the water soaks up rainfall and reduces the amount of runoff into the municipal storm water system. Green roofs protect the roof from exposure to the elements which can keep it watertight two or three times as long as a traditional roof. The plants provide a cooling effect, reducing the need for air conditioning in the summer months.

LiveRoof, LLC is a subsidiary of Hortech, Inc. LiveRoof brand green roof systems have been installed on many green roofs in the US and Canada, including The Van Andel Institute (Grand Rapids, MI), Toronto City Hall Renovation (ON), Vancouver Olympic Village (BC), Unilever Corporate Headquarters (Englewood Cliffs, NJ), a Make It Right Foundation home (New Orleans, LA), Habitat for Humanity (Bronx, NY), the Nature Conservancy Headquarters (Indianapolis, IN) and hundreds more projects on institutional, municipal, commercial and residential buildings. “Having LiveRoof selected for Extreme Makeover has been an honor for us, and it is exciting to see our product used on an inner city residential property,” states LiveRoof, LLC president Dave MacKenzie.
